Design brief
Many young adults lie awake with racing thoughts. I scoped the project to one target group, 18 to 25 year olds, and one moment: winding down the day. The goal: a calm mind, so falling asleep becomes easier.
An app that helps young adults wind down their day, with a little plant that grows as you take care of yourself.

Design challenge
How can I create a digital interactive product that helps young adults (18–25) wind down their day properly, so they get a calm mind and fall asleep more easily?
The project in motion
1UX Design
Many young adults lie awake with racing thoughts. I scoped the project to one target group, 18 to 25 year olds, and one moment: winding down the day. The goal: a calm mind, so falling asleep becomes easier.

SleepPlantzz grew out of extensive research into sleep. I did a literature study, visited sleep professionals and got in touch with people with sleep problems: my ideal users. They were very open about the obstacles they faced. Some of them took part in experiments: they kept a sleep diary and did the activities that would later end up in the app.
3UX Design
Through co-creation sessions, Crazy 8s and ideation with the SWAC model I came up with ideas, which I presented to the sleep professionals. The concept: you adopt a little plant. By keeping your sleep diary and doing a relaxing activity every evening, your plant keeps growing. I made all the illustrations in the app myself.

4UX Design
From sketches via wireframes to the final design: I tested every iteration with the people with sleep problems, and the sleep professionals kept giving me feedback and knowledge. Because the app is mostly used in the evening, I eventually chose a dark design that is easy on the eyes.
5UX Design
Finally I pitched my end product: an app in which you track your sleep and gain insight into it, shake your phone for a random relaxing evening activity, and care for a plant by caring for yourself.

Result
Keep your plant growing and take care of yourself at the same time.
Keep a sleep diary and gain insight into your sleep.
Do a random relaxing activity every evening and unwind.
A healthy habit only sticks when it feels fun. The plant turns self-care into something you look forward to.
